HLSC122 Evidence For Practice

Question:

Scenario 2 Mindfulness for PTSD (Posttraumatic stress Disorder)

Abdul is a military veteran who has five years of experience in medicine.

He is interested in enrolling in a university health science program as a service veteran.

Abdul was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during his military service. He still has symptoms from this condition occasionally.

Abdul knows that PTSD is also a possibility for health professionals.

Abdul recalled seeing a documentary about mindfulness-based therapy (MBT), which is used to treat PTSD.

Abdul decides that he will do his own systematic research to find high-quality evidence before visiting a general physician.

Clinical Question

Mindfulness-based therapy is effective in treating PTSD in veterans

Answer:

Introduction

One of the many mental health problems is post-traumatic stress disorder.

It is common among people exposed to stressful situations and various stressors.

This particular condition has been deemed more severe due to the increased concerns.

According to data, 2/3 people who are involved in war have PTSD (Patient.info 2016).

This is a clear indication of the severity and seriousness of the condition.

This was an important factor in the selection of research.

In addition, the research will reveal effective ways to manage the condition.

Scenario 2 reveals that Abdul was a combat veteran.

In Abdul’s case, PTSD resulted from his being exposed to war and the stressful environment that accompanied it.

Therefore, the main concern of this research would be to determine the effectiveness of any interventions related to the condition.

P

The main problem that the assignment will highlight is the effectiveness of mindfulness-based treatment in treating veterans suffering with PTSD.

“Mindfulness-based Therapy” “Post-traumatic Stress Disorder” were the main keywords associated with the research that was used to perform a systematic review.

“Mindfulness-based treatment”

I

Mindfulness-based therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapies and Prolonged Exposure are all options to manage PTSD.

The most effective intervention is mindfulness-based therapy. It can help with anxiety, depression, and other symptoms.

However, numerous researches have demonstrated that Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder are the best interventions for managing the condition.

These key words were used to describe the aspect of intervention in this research: “Mindfulness-based therapy” (“Post-traumatic stress disorder”) “Cognitive Processing Therapy”, “Prolonged exposure”

“Mindfulness-based therapy” “therapy.”

C

To complete the research and to establish the goal, which was the evaluation of mindfulness-based therapy’s effectiveness in treating veterans suffering from PTSD like Abdul, Gates et al. (2012) compared the other interventions.

To conduct a systematic search of evidence for mindfulness-based therapy’s effectiveness and comparability of other interventions, the key words used were: “mindfulness based therapy”, “Cognitive Processing Therapy”, “prolonged exposure” and “effectiveness”.

O

Research has shown that mindfulness-based therapy can help with trauma survivors’ anxiety and hyperarousal.

According to numerous researches, Cognitive Processing Therapy (Ptsd.va.gov) and Prolonged Exposure are the best methods for managing this condition.

Mindfulness-based therapy also acts in this situation, providing the structure and necessary support for those who are preparing to accept these interventions.

For military veterans like Abdul, mindful-based treatment is an effective way to manage the condition.

This research was conducted using the following key words: “Mindfulness-based therapy”; “effectiveness”; “Cognitive Processing therapy”; “Prolonged exposure”

PsycINFO or Medline can be used for data base research.

PsycINFO has international literature that is related to psychology and other disciplines.

It also offers psychological research, as well as its application. This resulted in relevant information regarding the research topic (Proquest 2017).

This database has more than 1800 professional reports, books, journals and books that are related to the research topic. Another reason to use the database is the fact that it is free.

In the course of the research, the Medline database was also used.

It uses medical subject headings for access to around 4800 biomedical journals. This is why this database was chosen.

The database also has journals that focus on research that is multidisciplinary.

The database has a wide variety of data and resources that align with the research topic.

Look for 3-“Mindfulness-based Therapy” and “Post-traumatic Stress Disorder”

The results of the third search resulted in 6 hits. They were used to further research the topic.

PICO’s question was “The effectiveness and efficacy of mindfulness-based treatment in veterans suffering from PTSD”.

The key words in the journals, and other resources were used to help determine the relevance of the search results to the topic.

The abstract, objectives, results, and references were also reviewed manually to determine the relevancy of the research result.

After manually reviewing the information sources, it was determined that they were in line with the research topic. This was used for further research and provided accuracy to the search results.

Conclusion

The research revealed that mindfulness-based therapy can be used to manage the complex issues of trauma survivors, including veterans like Abdul and their anxiety. It also helps them deal with hyper arousal, which is a common symptom of PTSD.
