Explain briefly what Low birth weight (Low Birth Weight) and Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) mean.
Examples of ergogenic aids are provided.
1: Low Birthweight and Intra Uterine growth Retardation (IUGR).
Low birth weight is a term used to describe babies who have a birth weight below 5 pounds and 8 ounces.
These babies are more at risk of developing renal disease because they were not fully developed in their mother’s womb.
Pre-mature babies are the leading cause of low birth weight (almost before 37 weeks). (Stanford Children’s Health 2018, 2018).
Another reason for low birth weight is intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR).
This refers to a condition in which the baby is unable to grow well during the pregnancy.
Fetal growth restriction is another term used to describe the IUGR.
An IUGR-exempt fetus has a fetal mass that is below the 10th percentile.
2: Define Ergogenic aids with Examples
An ergogenic or physiological aid is any treatment that improves the physiological variables or removes subjective restraints that reduce the person’s physiological capabilities.
An ergogenic technique is one that improves the performance. (Robergs 2010).
Examples: Ergogenic Aids with pharmacological properties:
Amphetamines – It’s the process of increasing concentration and decreasing fatigue.
Anabolic steroids are a way to increase your training time and intensity.
It reduces the recovery period.
